More than 700 people are still missing after a heavy flood swept through Mokwa, a community in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. This was revealed by the state governor, Umaru Bago.
The sad news was shared on Tuesday when former chief security officer to the late General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, visited the state with his team to offer condolences.
Governor Bago, who was represented by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, said the incident caused great pain to many families and led to serious loss of lives.
According to him, 207 people have so far been confirmed dead, and over 700 others are still missing. He said they are still searching for them. The flood destroyed many homes and affected the lives of thousands.
The governor also stated that over 3,000 households had to leave their homes. Out of about 400 affected buildings, 283 houses and 50 shops were completely washed away.
Governor Bago called the situation a national tragedy. He thanked all the individuals and groups who have donated money or sent relief materials to help the victims.
He further explained that the government is working closely with experts to find out the cause of the disaster and is waiting for a full report from them.
During the visit, Major Al-Mustapha said they came to sympathise with the people and government of Niger State, especially those in the Mokwa community who were badly affected by the flood.
