Senate considering bill for creation of new south-east state – Senator Osita Izunaso

Senator Osita Izunaso, who represents Imo West in the National Assembly, has announced that the Nigerian Senate is working on a new bill to create a state in the south-east region. The proposed name for the new state is “Anim.”

He shared this information during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, June 13. According to him, the bill has already passed its second reading in the Senate and is now being reviewed by the committee in charge of updating the constitution.

Senator Izunaso explained that the proposed Anim State would be made up of areas taken from both Anambra and Imo States.

He said the idea of creating this state is not about giving anyone special treatment. Instead, it’s about fairness. Every other region in Nigeria has six states, but the south-east has only five, which he said is unfair.

He pointed out that the north-west region has seven states, while other regions like the north-east, north-central, south-west, and south-south all have six. Only the south-east has five. This, he said, has made the region feel left out and treated unfairly for many years.

The senator also noted that the state can only be created through proper democratic steps. There will need to be a public vote or referendum where people can decide whether they want the new state or not. He said that this is how a democracy should work.
