The Nigerian Senate has responded to people who are calling the National Assembly a “rubber stamp” for President Bola Tinubu. Many critics believe lawmakers always agree with the President without asking questions.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, who leads the Senate’s Media and Publicity Committee, spoke on this issue. He said the Senate supports and approves only what is best for Nigerians. According to him, they don’t just agree with the President for no reason.
Senator Adaramodu pointed out that the National Assembly often receives more criticism than other parts of government. This is because lawmakers are easier to reach than the President or the courts.
He shared his thoughts during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time show on Thursday night.
He said, “We are the first people Nigerians come to with their concerns. They can’t reach the executive arm as easily as they reach us, so we hear the complaints first.”
The Senator explained that even though people say the National Assembly is just a “rubber stamp,” official documents need a stamp to be valid. He used this to show that the Senate plays an important role in government decisions.
He also said that decisions made by the executive or judiciary must still pass through the National Assembly to become official. According to him, the Senate approves only the things that truly help Nigerians.
As an example, Senator Adaramodu mentioned the student loan bill. He said the Senate passed it because it is good for Nigerian students, not because they were trying to please the President.
