Reno Omokri, a well-known political analyst and former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, believes President Bola Tinubu is doing better than Peter Obi would have if he had won the 2023 election under the Labour Party.
In an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Omokri shared his views on Tinubu’s performance so far. He focused on the removal of fuel subsidy—something Peter Obi also promised to do if he had become president.
Omokri explained that he still strongly believes Tinubu is doing a better job than Obi could have done. He used the fuel subsidy issue as an example. While Obi criticized Tinubu for how he removed it, Omokri reminded viewers that Obi had also promised to remove the subsidy if elected.
According to Omokri, Obi was trying to appear smarter than Tinubu by criticizing him. But Omokri found an earlier interview where Obi had clearly said he would remove the fuel subsidy immediately if he became president.
Omokri asked, if Obi planned to do the same thing, how would he have handled it differently from Tinubu, who removed the subsidy on his first day in office?
He also said that major global financial organizations like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) have praised Tinubu’s decision, even though it caused short-term hardship.
While some people may not trust the World Bank or IMF, Omokri pointed out that other respected agencies such as Fitch Ratings and Moody’s also supported Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Omokri noted that Fitch, a top rating agency in the world, upgraded Nigeria’s rating to “stable B-positive” because of Tinubu’s economic changes, especially the removal of fuel subsidy and the decision to let the naira exchange rate float.
He mentioned that Fitch made this upgrade in December, and Moody’s followed shortly after with another positive report, showing that Tinubu’s reforms were producing real results.
Omokri ended by saying the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira were bold but necessary moves. He believes these actions are working and that Tinubu deserves support, not criticism.
