Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history as the youngest person ever elected Mayor in the United Kingdom.
At the age of just 29, she now serves as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. She officially took on the role on May 16, 2025.
Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, her win is being celebrated as a great example of diversity and the power of young people in leadership. It also shows how Nigerians abroad are making an impact around the world.
Speaking at her swearing-in ceremony, Princess Bright said, “This is nothing short of God’s grace.” She added that she’s proud to serve her community and will represent her Nigerian roots with humility and excellence. She hopes her journey encourages others to step forward and lead.
Her political journey started when she was just 22 years old. That was when she was first elected as a councillor. Over the years, she has stood out for promoting youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic growth.
Politics runs in her family. Her mother, Dr. Afolasade Bright, once served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007. Her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright, MBE, is a respected leader in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Princess Bright’s success is part of a bigger movement of Nigerians stepping into important leadership roles around the world. Names like Kemi Badenoch in the UK, Chi Onwurah, Uzoma Asagwara in Canada, and Esther Agbaje in the United States show just how far Nigerians have come globally.
Her achievement also breaks the idea that young people are not interested in politics. In fact, it proves that young leaders, especially women, can bring powerful change to public life.
Experts say there are lessons for Nigerian leaders too. By supporting the diaspora and investing in future leaders, more success stories like Princess Bright’s can happen. Her historic win is not just for her—it’s a light of hope for young Nigerians everywhere.
