The entire Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka is in mourning after the shocking death of one of its youngest Associate Professors, Dr. Fidelis Okechukwu Ezeokoli. He was a respected lecturer in the Department of Building under the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. He had also served as the department’s former head.
News of his death spread quickly and left many people in shock. Students, staff, friends, and others shared their grief online. Many described him as a smart, hardworking, and kind man who made a big impact on his students and the university.
Dr. Ezeokoli, who was just 39 years old, came from Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. He died in a road accident. Though full details are not yet known, it was confirmed that he lost his life in a car crash. Many have described his death as both painful and unexpected, especially since he was doing so well in his career and had a bright future ahead.
He was seen as a shining light in the academic world and was well-loved for his dedication to teaching and mentoring young people in the field of Building Technology. His death has left a deep emptiness in the department where he taught and served with excellence.
In a message posted on social media, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences expressed their sadness, saying:
“The Department of Building, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, sadly announces the passing of our colleague and former HOD, Associate Prof. (Bldr) Fidelis Okechukwu Ezeokoli. He died in a car accident. His good deeds will always be remembered. Rest in peace.”
Aside from being a great lecturer, Dr. Ezeokoli also took part in many professional and community projects. He was an important voice in Nigeria’s Built Environment sector and helped support the development of the profession.
Since his death, people from the university, alumni, professionals, and his hometown have continued to send in their condolences. Everyone agrees that his death is a huge loss to the academic world, to Nigeria, and to the community of Ekwulobia.
The Ezeokoli family, led by Mr. Ifeanyi Celestine Ezeokoli, has shared the burial arrangements. The funeral will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
A Vigil Mass will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at the family compound in Ula, Ekwulobia.
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, there will be a lying-in-state and Requiem Mass starting at 8:00 a.m. at the same venue, followed by the burial.
A Thanksgiving Mass will take place on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, Ula, Ekwulobia, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
The legacy of Associate Professor Fidelis Ezeokoli will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the students he mentored.
