Kola Ologbondiyan, the former spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has explained why so many opposition leaders are leaving their parties to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He believes that these defections are happening because politicians fear being attacked by the ruling party.
Recently, several important figures from the PDP, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other key officials, moved to the APC. There are rumors that more political leaders might soon follow their example.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ologbondiyan shared that many of these defecting leaders are simply looking for protection from the ruling party. He reminded viewers of a statement made by the former National Chairman of the APC, who had promised that anyone who joined the party would have their past forgiven. This, according to Ologbondiyan, is why many politicians are choosing to switch sides.
Despite the APC gaining new members, Ologbondiyan believes the true challenge for the party is winning the support of the Nigerian people. He pointed out that no matter how many governors the APC may attract, they still need to win over the majority of Nigeria’s 200 million citizens in the 2027 elections.
He also noted that even if the APC were to gather all the country’s governors in one room and convince them to join, it wouldn’t be enough to guarantee success. The real deciding factor will be the people’s vote, not just political leaders.
