Saraki to chair PDP reconciliation committee ahead of NEC meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is working hard to fix internal problems ahead of an important National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting happening later this month. To help bring peace, the party has set up a reconciliation committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

This decision was made during a key meeting on Sunday night at the Abuja home of Governor Bala Mohammed, who is also the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

The meeting had many top party leaders in attendance. Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike was present but didn’t speak to reporters. Other attendees included Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Peter Mbah (Enugu). Several former governors also joined, such as Liyel Imoke, Achike Udenwa, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Seriake Dickson. Acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagun and former Caretaker Committee Chairman Ahmed Markafi were also there.

After the meeting, Governor Bala Mohammed told journalists that the purpose was to ensure the NEC meeting goes smoothly and to prepare for a national convention later this year. He said bringing in former governors was a smart move because of their experience in solving party issues.

Speaking about recent defections to the ruling APC, Governor Mohammed said the PDP isn’t worried. He stated that the party is planning how to win back control in the states it still governs.

Since the 2023 elections, the PDP has faced serious internal problems. Disagreements and factional divisions have weakened the party. One major problem is the ongoing dispute between former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Sim Fubara. Several peace efforts have failed to fix the issue.

The defections haven’t stopped. Three senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki—recently joined the APC after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu. These developments have caused concern among opposition leaders, who worry that Nigeria might be heading toward a one-party political system.
