You’re Very Wrong, Aisha Yesufu Disagrees With Peter Obi Over 2012 Protest

Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu, who supported Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, has disagreed with something Obi recently said. He talked about the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protest, where people spoke out against the removal of fuel subsidy. Obi said that the protest was not needed at that time, but Aisha strongly disagrees.

In a YouTube video posted on Thursday, Aisha criticized Obi’s comment. He said that during President Goodluck Jonathan’s time, there was no reason to protest even though fuel prices went up from N87 to N120. Aisha said this thinking is completely wrong.

She explained that in a democratic country, people always have the right to protest. It doesn’t matter who is in power—protests are part of what keeps a country fair and accountable.

Aisha also mentioned that in countries that are doing well, people protest all the time. She warned Obi that if he becomes president and thinks people won’t protest, he is mistaken.

She added that if Obi becomes Nigeria’s president and something goes wrong, she would still protest without any fear. She believes strongly in standing up for what is right.

Talking more about the 2012 protest, Aisha explained that back then, the price of fuel was N120. The high prices we see today, like N900, were still in the future. People protest based on what they are facing at the moment, not what might happen later.

According to her, that was exactly the right time to protest. The Occupy Nigeria movement during Jonathan’s rule was necessary and should not be dismissed.

In conclusion, Aisha Yesufu made it clear that protesting is always needed when the people feel something is wrong—no matter who is in government. She believes Peter Obi was wrong to say the 2012 protests were not necessary.
