Sexual harassment: I was never going to step down as Senate President – Akpabio declares

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said he never thought of stepping down from his role because of the sexual harassment allegations made against him.

He made this statement during a Senate meeting on Thursday, while replying to Senate Majority Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, who showed public support for him.

Senator Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central, said people who expected Akpabio to resign must be disappointed by now.

He thanked his fellow senators for backing the Senate President. He also said that lawmakers will always ask for clear evidence before judging anyone accused of wrongdoing.

Bamidele said, “Those who thought the Senate would remove you by now must realize we’re focused on our work. No matter the accusation, we’ll ask for proof and act in the best interest of the public.”

In response, Akpabio said, “Who said I was ever going to resign because of false accusations?”

He explained that in the U.S., some Black people were wrongly jailed for many years over false claims. He said he won’t let something like that happen to him.

He added that if some people expected him to step down and later say the accusations were false, they should forget it. He said he will not step down for lies.

Recently, a female senator who was suspended for breaking Senate rules posted a sarcastic apology to Akpabio on Facebook.

The senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, said she was sorry for the “crime of maintaining dignity and self-respect,” clearly mocking the situation.

Now, Akpabio has gone to court. He’s asking a Federal High Court in Abuja to force the suspended senator to take down the mocking post.
