Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has called on the Nigerian government to focus less on holding security summits and more on taking serious action to stop terrorists and bandits in the country.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sani said that Nigerians are tired of just hearing discussions about insecurity. According to him, the country needs real and effective steps to stop the violence that has affected so many people.
He reminded Nigerians that the fight against terrorism and banditry has lasted more than ten years. Despite all the talks and meetings, the attacks haven’t stopped, especially in the northern part of the country.
Sani believes that winning the war against these criminals is just as important as keeping the country united and peaceful. Without peace and safety, Nigeria’s future remains uncertain.
Recently, the Senate announced plans to organize a two-day national security summit in Abuja. The goal is to bring together leaders from all levels of government, traditional institutions, and security experts to find lasting solutions to the rising insecurity, particularly in northern states where many lives and homes have been lost.
While some lawmakers support the summit and believe it could bring new ideas and stronger strategies for the military, others are not so hopeful. They worry that past summits haven’t brought any real change and fear this one may also be a waste of time.
Shehu Sani shared the same concern. He said the country has already had enough of these discussions, and what is urgently needed now is action. He pointed out how terrorists are still kidnapping people, burning villages, and collecting ransom from families.
He also noted that even when the government claims to have defeated the terrorists, they always seem to return stronger and more daring. This, he said, proves that talks alone won’t solve the problem.
Sani further explained that other African countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso are dealing with similar security issues. In some of those nations, their governments were overthrown by the military due to their failure to handle insecurity properly.
As a solution, Sani advised that Nigeria should adopt new methods, especially by using modern technology. He warned that while terrorists are already using tools like drones, Nigeria still lags behind in applying advanced tech to fight them.
He ended by saying that unless Nigeria fully crushes the terrorist threat, the country will continue to face pain and suffering.
