Cardinals arrive in Rome as they prepare to elect new Pope (Photos)

Catholic Cardinals from around the world have started arriving in Rome as preparations begin to choose the next leader of the Catholic Church.

The formal election process, known as the Conclave, is a centuries-old tradition that follows strict procedures. This important event will officially begin on Wednesday, May 7.

As part of the process, the Cardinals have begun settling into their temporary housing in the Vatican. They will live in Vatican-provided accommodation throughout the Conclave.

Usually, they stay at Santa Marta guesthouse, which offers private bathrooms and hotel-style services. However, this time, there are more Cardinals than available rooms, so some will be housed elsewhere.

On Monday, Vatican News reported that 170 Cardinals took part in the 11th General Congregation—a special meeting held before the Conclave. Among them, 132 Cardinals are eligible to vote for the new Pope.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said that the Cardinals discussed many global challenges such as migration, ethnic division, and conflicts in Asia and Africa. They also reflected on the Church’s future in today’s divided world.

Bruni added that the Cardinals are looking for a Pope who is close to the people—a leader who values open dialogue and building strong relationships.
