Daniel Bwala, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Policy, has advised Peter Obi not to consider running as a vice presidential candidate in the 2027 elections. Bwala warned that such a move could significantly damage Obi’s political influence and alienate his supporters.
Peter Obi was previously the running mate of Atiku Abubakar during the 2019 elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, he later defected to the Labour Party, where he contested as a presidential candidate in 2023. His campaign gained massive support from Nigerians, particularly the youth, who are collectively known as the Obidient movement.
The Obidient movement is a group of Nigerians, both at home and abroad, who believe in Obi’s vision for transforming the country. Bwala cautioned that if Obi were to accept a vice presidential slot, it would undermine his credibility, causing many of his supporters to withdraw their backing.
In an interview with Channels Television, Bwala noted that the chances of defeating Tinubu in the next election are slim for any Nigerian politician. He emphasized that Obi’s unique appeal lies in his ambition to lead the country as president. Abandoning that ambition could result in losing the trust and support of his followers.
According to Bwala, many of Obi’s supporters expect him to remain focused on his presidential aspirations. A shift to a vice presidential role might not only disappoint them but also raise questions about Obi’s commitment to his political ideology.
He highlighted Tinubu’s political resilience and ability to build alliances, even under challenging circumstances. Now in office, Tinubu is in a stronger position to implement policies, deliver good governance, and foster national unity.
Bwala also pointed out that Tinubu’s influence is growing as key political figures, including governors and senators from different parties, are aligning themselves with his administration. He credited Tinubu for his strategic leadership and ability to unite diverse groups under a common vision.
While acknowledging that no leader is perfect, Bwala praised Tinubu’s headstrong approach and his dedication to moving the nation forward. He concluded that Peter Obi would be making a serious miscalculation if he decided to run as a vice presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.
