President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Abia State this month to officially open the Port Harcourt Federal Road in Aba, which is almost fully rebuilt by the state government.
This follows former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent visit, where he commissioned the 46.4-kilometre Umuahia-Akara-Abiriba Road, also fixed by the state.
Governor Alex Otti shared the news during his April media briefing in Umuahia, the state capital. He said President Tinubu had earlier agreed to commission the road and hoped he would keep his promise.
During the same visit, the president is also expected to start the construction of a major project — the $1.3 billion Abia Medical City. Governor Otti described it as the biggest plan of his administration so far.
He explained that the goal of the Medical City is to reduce the number of Nigerians traveling abroad for medical care, which currently costs the country over $2 billion every year.
“We’ve been working on this project since 2023,” Governor Otti said. “We formed a team, studied successful models, found the right partners, and secured funding. We’re using a Build-Operate-Transfer model with experienced investors.”
He added that even if just 10% of the money spent on medical tourism is used locally, it could bring in about $200 million yearly—enough to keep the medical city running successfully.
