Senegalese-American singer Akon has said that Elon Musk is supporting white South Africans because they live in worse conditions than Black South Africans. Akon shared this opinion during a recent episode of the Bagfuel Brigade podcast.
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, was born and raised in South Africa. He has often spoken out about what he calls “racist ownership laws” and a “genocide” against white farmers in the country.
Musk made these statements after South Africa passed the Expropriation Act earlier this year. This law allows the government to take land in some cases—sometimes without paying for it—especially if the land is not being used or if it helps public interests.
Akon said that, in his view, white people in South Africa live in poorer conditions than Black people. He claimed that unlike in America, South African white people now live in poorer areas while Black South Africans are doing better. He believes this is why Elon Musk is speaking out.
“In South Africa, the white folks don’t have it as good as in America,” Akon said. “White folks are fighting for equality there because the Black population is united and stronger.”
However, Akon’s view does not match the facts. According to the World Bank, white people in South Africa still earn almost three times more than Black people. And even though apartheid ended 30 years ago, white farmers still own about 75% of the land, while they only make up 7% of the population.
So, while Akon believes Elon Musk is defending a mistreated group, data shows that white South Africans still hold more wealth and land than most Black citizens.
