We did not find weapon of terrorism on Kanu during arrest in Lagos – DSS witness tells court

A witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) told the Federal High Court in Abuja that no weapons linked to terrorism or violence were found on Nnamdi Kanu when he was arrested in Lagos on October 15, 2015.

The DSS officer, referred to as PWAAA in court, also said nothing threatening was recovered from the woman who was arrested along with Kanu.

During cross-examination by Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), the witness admitted that all the items seized were Kanu’s personal belongings.

He added that although the items themselves weren’t dangerous, the government suspects that Kanu may have intended to use them for other purposes.

PWAAA said he didn’t analyze the recovered items. His main job was to arrest Kanu and collect a statement from him.

When asked further, the officer said he did check Kanu’s phone but didn’t present the findings in court because they weren’t important to the case.

He also agreed that after being held for 10 years, most of the items might have lost their value.

He clarified that no one was brought to Kanu for a face-to-face accusation related to terrorism.

The DSS witness also confirmed that Kanu gave his statement without a lawyer present.

Items taken from Kanu included a laptop, iPads, MacBooks, various modems, phones, microphones, sound equipment, and personal belongings like perfumes, wristwatches, and clothes.

Also among the items were documents, an IPOB ID card, Nigerian and British passports, bank cards, and some cords and accessories.

Details are still expected to emerge as the case continues.
