Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has asked the United States for more support in fighting insecurity in the country. He made this request during a meeting with Major General Garrick Harmon, the Director for Strategy, Engagement, and Programs at the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), who was visiting Nigeria for the first time in his current role.
The meeting took place in Abuja at the Ship House, where both leaders discussed ways to improve military cooperation between Nigeria and the US.
Matawalle asked for more help from the US in important areas like intelligence sharing, counterterrorism, training, and supplying military equipment. He said Nigeria is committed to peace and security in the region but cannot achieve this goal alone.
He stressed the need for stronger partnerships, especially to fight terrorism, insurgency, and threats that cross national borders.
In response, Major General Harmon thanked the Nigerian officials for their warm welcome and promised that the US would continue to support Nigeria’s efforts to improve security and stability in West Africa.
Both sides agreed on the importance of working more closely together to handle the region’s growing security problems.
