A student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, was shot dead on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in what appears to be a cult-related attack.
Reports say the student had just finished his exams and was walking toward the back gate of the school when some armed men stopped him and shot him twice at close range. Witnesses said the attackers quickly left the scene after making sure the victim was dead.
Students who saw the incident ran for safety, and many were shocked by what happened. One student said it all happened very fast.
Another student said the attackers found a gun and a bullet in the victim’s bag, which made it seem like he was also involved in cult activities.
A source in the school linked the killing to an ongoing fight between cult groups on campus. The source said it was likely payback for another shooting that happened the week before, where someone was shot but survived.
The school’s spokesperson, Adekunle Adams, said the shooting didn’t happen inside the campus but at a lounge near the school. He added that there are no cult-related problems on campus.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and said it was caused by rival cult members. Police said they got a distress call around 3 p.m. and found the victim with gunshot wounds. They also found charms and live bullets on him. The body has been taken to the morgue for an autopsy.
Seven suspects have been arrested, and the investigation is still ongoing.
