On May 1, workers from Uber, Bolt, inDrive, and other app-based transport companies in Lagos, Nigeria, will be protesting. The protest is organized by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) to highlight issues like low wages, unsafe working conditions, and unfair treatment by these companies.
The workers will stay off the apps for 24 hours to show their frustration. AUATON’s Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, said the protest is against things like poor pay, unjust deactivations, security risks, and high commissions taken by the companies.
Workers also complain about facial recognition systems, lack of proper rider profiles, and unfair work policies.
Iwindoye mentioned that despite trying to talk to the companies, they have not listened to the workers’ concerns. He said the only way to get their attention is through economic pressure, meaning by shutting down services for a day. The goal is to make the companies understand that the workers will not be ignored.
The union plans to keep the pressure on even after the protest. They will continue to push for fair wages, safe working conditions, and better treatment.
Iwindoye is calling for a global response to show the workers’ unity and strength. The workers want to make it clear that they are not just individuals but a united group that deserves respect and fairness from these app-based companies.
