Russia and Iran have officially agreed to work together through a new 20-year strategic partnership. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law to approve the agreement on Monday. Both parts of Russia’s parliament—the Federation Council and the State Duma—had already approved the deal earlier in April.
The agreement covers many areas, including trade, transport, banking, energy, peaceful use of nuclear power, arms control, and fighting terrorism. It also aims to strengthen security and defense ties between the two countries. Russia and Iran plan to work closely together not just regionally, but also on the global stage.
This important deal was first signed on January 17 in Moscow by President Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Putin described the agreement as a “breakthrough document” that will help both countries grow in a stable and sustainable way. He said it will also support the development of the wider Eurasian region.
The partnership can automatically be extended in five-year periods after the initial 20 years. It marks a big step forward in the growing relationship between Russia and Iran.
