Police Deny Reports Linking First Lady Remi Tinubu’s Convoy to Fatal Accident in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has denied allegations claiming that a vehicle in First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s convoy was involved in the death of a young girl in Akure on Thursday, April 18. The police described these claims as untrue and misleading.

Senator Tinubu was in Ondo State to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribute 10,000 professional kits, including scrubs and Crocs, to midwives across the South-West region.

In a statement released by the police spokesperson, DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Command dismissed the report by Sahara Reporters, labeling it as inaccurate and lacking credible evidence.

According to the statement, eyewitnesses and police investigations revealed that the tragic incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver in an unregistered white Lexus vehicle. The police emphasized that none of the vehicles in the First Lady’s convoy were involved in the accident.

Witnesses at the scene of the crash, including a motorcyclist who pursued the fleeing driver, confirmed that the hit-and-run car was responsible for the accident in the Oba-Ile area of Akure. The victim’s parents also supported this account.

Additionally, the police noted an error in Sahara Reporters’ publication, which incorrectly stated the victim’s age as nine years old. The child’s parents clarified that the girl was seven, exposing inaccuracies in the report.

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police has since visited the victim’s family, offering condolences and assuring them of a transparent investigation into the matter.

The police reaffirmed that the First Lady’s convoy had no connection to the tragic incident.
