Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, believes the 2027 presidential election will not be a simple contest between political parties. Instead, he says it will be between Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Makinde shared this opinion during an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Politics Today’ on Tuesday. He said, “The 2027 election won’t be PDP versus APC; it would be Nigerians versus APC. Mark my word on that.”
He criticized the APC-led government for Nigeria’s struggling economy and rising security problems. According to him, the next election will be a time for Nigerians to judge President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Makinde said the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is still the hope of ordinary Nigerians. He promised that the PDP would learn from its past mistakes and come back stronger in 2027.
He admitted that one of the biggest errors in the 2023 election was the PDP giving the top three campaign positions only to people from the northern region. This, he said, made it hard to gain support from other parts of the country.
In the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar from the North East was the presidential candidate, Iyorchia Ayu from the North Central was the national chairman, and Aminu Tambuwal from the North West was the campaign director general. Makinde said this setup was unfair and hurt the party’s chances.
He also said the PDP ticket could have been stronger if Atiku had picked then-Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike as his running mate.
Makinde’s comments show that the PDP is preparing to do things differently and hopes to win back the trust of Nigerians in 2027.
