Trump withdraws Stefanik nomination as UN ambassador

President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw Representative Elise Stefanik’s nomination for the position of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Stefanik, a Republican from New York, will remain in Congress instead.

Trump made this announcement on Thursday through his Truth Social account. He explained that keeping Stefanik in Congress is crucial because of the Republican Party’s narrow majority in the House.

Trump stated that Stefanik is one of his strongest allies and plays a key role in pushing his policies. He emphasized that her presence in Congress is important for achieving goals such as tax cuts, job creation, economic growth, border security, and energy independence.

“With such a small majority, I don’t want to risk losing her seat. The people love Elise, and with her in Congress, we have nothing to worry about on election day. Others can take on the UN ambassador role,” Trump said.

Reports suggest that Stefanik faced pressure to step away from the nomination. CBS News indicated that, although she was likely to be confirmed by the Senate with support from both parties, the Republican Party’s slim majority in the House played a big role in the decision.

Fox News also reported that political issues in Stefanik’s home district influenced the situation. New York’s primary system and the lack of a strong GOP replacement for Stefanik led to concerns about a special election for her seat.

With this decision, Stefanik will continue serving in Congress, while Trump looks for another candidate for the UN ambassador position.
