The Nigerian Super Eagles played a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Despite taking the lead in the 74th minute through Victor Osimhen, they conceded a late equalizer in the 90th minute.
Veteran journalist Reuben Abati strongly criticized the team’s performance, saying they lost focus after Osimhen’s goal. Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Abati described the Super Eagles as developing “elephantiasis,” meaning they became slow and unresponsive after taking the lead.
The draw leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C, trailing behind leaders South Africa. Fans and analysts are now doing calculations to see if the team still has a chance to qualify for the World Cup.
Abati also pointed out issues such as poor leadership and administration in Nigerian football. He referred to comments by former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, who blamed the country’s struggles on the decision to remove the Ministry of Sports and transfer responsibilities to the National Sports Commission.
With tough matches ahead against Rwanda and South Africa, Abati warned that Nigeria must stay focused. He noted that Zimbabwe proved they were serious by scoring in the 90th minute, while the Super Eagles lost concentration. He expressed concern that Nigerians are now worried about missing the World Cup rather than preparing for it.
Despite the setback, Nigeria still has a chance to qualify. However, the team must improve to avoid further disappointment.
