The Imo State Police Command has dismissed a recent media report accusing its Anti-Kidnapping Unit of extortion and mistreatment of suspects at the Tiger Base in Owerri.
In a press statement, the police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, stated that the allegations in the report titled “Investigation Exposes Alarming Abuse of Detainees at Police’s Tiger Base” are false and misleading. He emphasized that the report did not present verified facts and misrepresented the Command’s operations.
According to Okoye, the media outlet that published the report failed to confirm the claims with the police before releasing the story. He noted that the accusations, supposedly from individuals using fake names, were investigated and found to be untrue.
The police spokesperson also expressed concerns about the credibility of the report and urged journalists to verify their stories before publishing. He assured the public that the Imo Police Command follows legal procedures in handling suspects and respects their rights.
Furthermore, Okoye encouraged citizens to report genuine complaints through the police’s Complaint Response Unit. He reassured that the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, is committed to investigating any valid complaints and ensuring that any officer found guilty of misconduct will be disciplined.
The police urged the media to avoid spreading false information, as it damages public trust and the integrity of the Force.
