Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has spoken out against the removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision, calling it unconstitutional and dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement on his X handle, Obi condemned the removal of Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
He said this action goes against the constitution and undermines the rule of law. According to him, it is a reckless decision that could weaken Nigeria’s democracy and governance.
Obi warned that this move brings Nigeria back into a state of lawlessness, erasing the democratic progress made in the last 26 years. He accused President Tinubu of using excessive power by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State without following legal procedures.
He stated that the constitution does not allow the President to remove a sitting governor without due process. By doing so, he said, the government is forcefully imposing its control, which is a threat to democratic values.
Obi urged the National Assembly and other stakeholders to reject this decision, warning that allowing it to stand would encourage more illegal actions in the future.
He emphasized that Nigeria is already struggling with election malpractice and disregard for the law. If elected officials can be removed so easily, the country could fall into deeper political instability.
He called on all democratic institutions to resist this move, saying failure to do so would increase lawlessness and harm Nigeria’s democracy.
