Activist Madubuachi Idam has called on President Bola Tinubu to remove Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from his position. This request follows the state of emergency declared in Rivers State due to political unrest.
Idam’s statement came after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for six months. Tinubu appointed a sole administrator to manage the state’s affairs during this time.
Tinubu expressed concern over the political crisis in the state and accused Governor Fubara of demolishing the State House of Assembly building.
In his statement, Idam said, “No Democrat would support the suspension of a democratically elected government. However, given the situation, it may be necessary for a neutral power to temporarily manage the state.”
Idam added that the state of emergency in Rivers was long overdue and noted that the invocation of Section 305 of the Constitution was a step in the right direction, as long as the president remains politically impartial.
He also suggested that President Tinubu should go a step further and relieve Wike of his duties as a cabinet member. Idam believes this would give Wike the chance to reconsider his political actions in the state. Without this, he warned that the actions could seem like mere political gestures or even hypocritical.
Idam also advised Governor Fubara to use this opportunity to make peace with his political allies to try to save his position, provided Minister Wike is open to reconciliation. Ultimately, Idam emphasized that peace must be prioritized above any political ambitions, as human lives and well-being are the most important consideration.
