Trump warns Iran will be ‘held responsible’ for Houthi attacks from Yemen
Former US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that it will be held responsible for attacks by the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Houthis have targeted Israeli and commercial ships in the Red Sea, protesting against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Trump posted the warning on his social media platform, Truth Social, signing it with his name. He has previously urged Iran to stop supporting the Houthis, who are believed to receive weapons and backing from Tehran. Military experts say the Houthis are part of an informal group supported by Iran, known as the “axis of resistance.”
“Let nobody be fooled! The hundreds of attacks being made by Houthi, the sinister mobsters and thugs based in Yemen, who are hated by the Yemeni people, all emanate from, and are created by IRAN,” Trump wrote.
“Any further attack or retaliation by the ‘Houthis’ will be met with great force, and there is no guarantee that that force will stop there.”
Trump’s latest comments suggest he might consider military action against Iran if the attacks continue. He has also been pressuring Iran to limit its nuclear program. However, in 2018, during his first term, he withdrew the US from a major nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Earlier this month, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warning of possible military action if a new nuclear deal is not reached. Khamenei rejected the warning, accusing Trump of bullying and reminding him that the US abandoned the previous agreement.
“Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of IRAN, and IRAN will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!” Trump wrote in his post.
Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and denies developing nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, the US carried out about 47 airstrikes over the weekend, targeting seven Yemeni provinces, including the capital, Sanaa. Reports say around 53 people were killed in the attacks. While announcing the airstrikes, Trump again warned Iran about its support for the Houthis.
The situation remains tense, with growing fears of a broader conflict in the region.
“To Iran: Support for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT threaten the American People, their President, who has received one of the largest mandates in Presidential History, or Worldwide shipping lanes,” he wrote.
“If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and, we won’t be nice about it!”
