Former Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez believes that he was better than some of the greatest midfielders in football history. He claimed that in his prime, he outperformed legends like Zinedine Zidane, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Xavi.
Rodriguez made this bold statement while speaking on Los Amigos de Edu, a show hosted by Edu Aguirre. When asked to compare himself with Zidane, he confidently replied, “Zidane was very good, he won the World Cup, but… James. In my prime, James.”
He repeated the same response when asked to choose between himself and Modric, Kroos, and Xavi.
James also shared how he joined Real Madrid after an incredible 2014 FIFA World Cup. He recalled that his agent, Jorge Mendes, informed him about the club’s interest during the tournament.
“During the World Cup, Jorge Mendes told me that Real Madrid wanted me. He warned me to stay focused, and that gave me more strength. Right after that, I scored against Japan and then two goals against Uruguay,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez won the Golden Boot in that World Cup, and soon after, he signed for Real Madrid. During his time at the club, he played 125 matches, scored 37 goals, and provided 42 assists.
His recent comments have sparked debate among football fans, with some agreeing with him and others defending the legendary midfielders he mentioned.
