Impeachment: I won’t stop Rivers Assembly from performing their duties – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made it clear that he will not interfere with the Rivers State House of Assembly as they carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

One of the main duties of the Assembly is to check the governor’s actions and, if necessary, impeach him for violating the law. Currently, about 27 lawmakers are in conflict with Governor Siminalayi Fubara because they remain loyal to Wike.

Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that the lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule, should resume their duties. The court also ordered Governor Fubara to present the 2025 budget to the full House and conduct new local council elections.

There are speculations that the majority lawmakers might move to impeach the governor. However, Wike stated that he would not stop them from doing their work.

“I will not stop the Assembly from performing their duties. People who love peace don’t make threats,” Wike said while addressing a large gathering of Kalabari people on Saturday.

He added, “The Assembly must do their work. If their actions are constitutional, they should go ahead.”

Wike also criticized those who only speak negatively about him without offering solutions. He asked, “What initiative have they introduced? Insulting me doesn’t bother me. Does abuse kill anyone?”

He continued, “Who is under pressure now? Isn’t it them?”

With political tension rising in Rivers State, all eyes are on the Assembly to see what actions they will take next.
