Emirate tussle: Sanusi remains Emir – Kano govt

The Kano State Government has assured the public that Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the 16th Emir of Kano, despite a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal.

The state’s Attorney General, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, clarified that the court’s decision did not nullify Sanusi’s reinstatement. He explained that the Court of Appeal had earlier ruled on January 10, 2025, confirming the government’s authority to reappoint Sanusi. Since that decision stands, only the Supreme Court has the power to overturn it.

The recent ruling came after Alhaji Aminu Baba Dan Agundi, a supporter of the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, requested a stay of execution while appealing to the Supreme Court.

The Court of Appeal decided to maintain the current situation until the Supreme Court gives its final verdict.

Dederi reassured the public that the January 10 ruling remains valid and that the Court of Appeal cannot reverse its own decision. The Supreme Court will now determine the final outcome of the case.

This legal battle follows the Kano State Government’s repeal of the Emirate Council Law in 2024, which led to Sanusi’s reinstatement. With the Supreme Court now involved, the final decision on the Emirship crisis is still pending.
