Nnamdi Kanu’s trial to start afresh March 21, identity of new judge revealed

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will start over on March 21, 2025. The case has been assigned to a new judge, Justice James Omotosho, of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu’s lead lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed that hearing notices have already been sent out. He described this as a significant moment and assured that the legal team is prepared for the trial.

Ejimakor explained that everything done in the case since Kanu’s arrest in 2015, including past court rulings and appeals, no longer stands. The trial will start as if it had never happened before. However, the legal team has not yet received the new charges against Kanu.

He expressed concern that the government might serve the charges at the last minute, possibly a day before the hearing or even in court. This could make it difficult to review the charges before the trial begins.

Despite these concerns, Kanu is expected to be re-arraigned for the remaining seven charges of treason filed by the Federal Government. The case file and necessary documents have already been transferred to Justice Omotosho’s court, ensuring the trial proceeds as scheduled.

Barring any unexpected delays, Kanu’s fresh trial will officially begin on March 21.
