Court dismisses bail application of four suspects linked to bandit kingpin Bello Turji

A Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to four suspects accused of having ties with notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. The judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, ruled that releasing them would be a serious threat to national security.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) led the prosecution, arguing that the suspects might escape or interfere with the trial if granted bail. The prosecution’s lawyer, David Kaswe, pointed out that the suspects played key roles in terrorism activities in northern Nigeria.

Kaswe also noted that Bello Turji and other suspects are still at large, making it even more important to keep the accused in custody. Since the charges carry heavy penalties, the court agreed that the risk of them fleeing was high.

The court also approved a special request to protect witnesses in the case. Justice Nwite stressed that while every suspect is considered innocent until proven guilty, national security concerns must be taken seriously.

To ensure justice is served quickly, the judge ordered an accelerated hearing. The prosecution is expected to present strong evidence as the trial begins immediately.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, working to track down other members of Bello Turji’s criminal network.
