It’s absurd – Gudmundsson slams Man United for letting ‘best’ player leave Old Trafford

Fiorentina forward Albert Gudmundsson has criticized Manchester United for letting David De Gea leave Old Trafford. He described the decision as “absurd” and said De Gea is the best goalkeeper he has played with in his career.

De Gea left Manchester United as a free agent after spending 12 years at the club. Former United manager Erik ten Hag allowed his exit at the end of the 2022-23 season, replacing him with Andre Onana. Ten Hag reportedly wanted a goalkeeper who was better at playing with the ball at his feet.

Speaking to TMW, Gudmundsson shared his thoughts on De Gea’s departure. He praised the Spanish goalkeeper for his talent and humble nature.

“It’s absurd that Manchester United decided to let go of someone like him. He’s a great guy, very humble, and we talk about everything,” Gudmundsson said via Manchester Evening News. “He played in the Premier League for eleven years, won many titles, and is the best goalkeeper I’ve ever played with. It’s amazing to share the pitch with him.”

Reports say that United initially offered De Gea a new contract but later withdrew it. They then proposed a new deal with lower wages, which led to De Gea’s decision to leave the club.

Now in Italy, De Gea is enjoying his football, proving he still has a lot to offer in his career.
