Johns Hopkins University has announced that it will cut over 2,000 jobs in the U.S. and other countries. This comes after President Donald Trump’s administration stopped $800 million in grants to the university.
This is the biggest layoff in the university’s history. It includes 247 job losses in the U.S. and 1,975 more in 44 countries. The cuts will affect the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the medical school, and the international health non-profit, Jhpiego.
In a statement, the university called it a “difficult day” and said losing the USAID funding means shutting down important programs in Baltimore and worldwide.
Since returning to office on January 20, Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have moved to weaken the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the administration has already canceled over 80% of USAID programs.
The Trump administration is also investigating 60 American universities, including Johns Hopkins, over campus protests supporting Palestine.
