Tonye Cole, the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has spoken out about the political crisis in the state.
He described the recent action of the Rivers State House of Assembly—blocking Governor Siminalayi Fubara from entering the legislative quarters—as a clear message that the governor has no real power.
Speaking on Arise Television, Cole said this power struggle is damaging the state and will make people suffer. He expressed concern that investors will stay away from Rivers State because of the ongoing political tension.
The crisis escalated when Fubara was locked out of the legislative quarters while trying to present the 2025 budget. The 27 lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule and loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, had requested that the budget be re-presented after a Supreme Court ruling on February 28, 2025.
Governor Fubara told reporters that he had informed the lawmakers about his visit in advance. However, despite official communication from the state government, he was denied entry.
Cole warned that this political drama is harming Rivers State. He said, “This is just a power play, and in the end, the people will suffer. No investments will come into the state at this time.”
He further stated that the message behind the governor’s treatment is clear: Fubara may have the title, but he does not truly govern the state. Cole believes this situation is not good for the state’s future.
