The United States, led by President Donald Trump, has made two major decisions against Ukraine within two weeks. These decisions come as Ukraine continues to fight against Russia in a war that has lasted for three years.
The US government has decided to:
- Pause military aid to Ukraine.
- Stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine.
These actions show a major change in US foreign policy, moving away from supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
The US-Ukraine relationship took a turn for the worse on Friday, February 28, 2025. On that day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with President Trump at the White House. After a tense meeting, the US decided to suspend its military support to Ukraine.
More recently, Trump confirmed that the US has also ended intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
These decisions have weakened Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian attacks. In the past few days, Russia has increased its bombardments on Ukraine.
Reacting to the situation, Trump said that any leader would do what Russian President Vladimir Putin is doing to Ukraine. However, on Friday, Trump also warned Russia that he might impose tariff sanctions in response to its renewed attacks on Ukraine.
With the war intensifying and the US stepping back, Ukraine now faces even greater challenges in defending itself against Russia.
