The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has asked the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling on Rivers State. The group believes that the judgment could negatively impact governance and the well-being of the people.
The Supreme Court recently ruled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should stop releasing monthly federal allocations to Rivers State.
The court also ordered Governor Siminalayi Fubara to recognize the 27 lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule, who had previously been excluded from the Rivers State House of Assembly.
PANDEF’s National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Igali, expressed concerns during an interview on Channels Television. He emphasized that without federal funds, Rivers State might struggle to provide essential services like healthcare, education, and sanitation.
Igali pointed out that withholding federal funds is a serious issue because it affects ordinary citizens. Hospitals need medicines, schools require resources, and social services must continue. He warned that such financial restrictions could lead to unrest.
While Governor Fubara has agreed to follow the court’s decision, PANDEF believes the Supreme Court should review the ruling. According to Igali, there have been past instances where the court reconsidered its decisions due to their social impact.
PANDEF is urging the Supreme Court to take another look at the case and ensure that Rivers State is not deprived of necessary funds. The group hopes for a peaceful resolution that allows the state to function smoothly.
Would the Supreme Court reconsider its ruling? Only time will tell, but PANDEF remains hopeful.
