President Bola Tinubu has appointed Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Initial.
The announcement was made on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, the presidential adviser on information and strategy. This appointment shows the government’s renewed commitment to solving Nigeria’s livestock sector challenges.
Before this role, Jega was the co-chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee. Now, as an adviser, he will help shape policies to improve livestock farming in the country.
Last year, President Tinubu stressed the need to modernize and commercialize Nigeria’s livestock industry. He pointed out that the sector had been neglected for years, missing opportunities for economic growth.
In 2023, the president approved the formation of a livestock committee to tackle conflicts between herders and farmers. The goal was to promote peace and boost dairy and livestock farming. The committee was created after Tinubu reviewed a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Conflict Resolution.
With Jega’s leadership, the government hopes to introduce better policies for livestock management. If properly implemented, these reforms could reduce clashes between herders and farmers, increase productivity, and boost Nigeria’s agricultural economy.
This appointment signals a strong step toward transforming livestock farming into a thriving industry that benefits farmers, herders, and the nation as a whole.
