A group of opposition senators visited Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the suspended senator representing Kogi Central, at her home on Friday. The visit was led by Seriake Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State and a member of the Senate Ethics and Privileges Committee.
Dickson shared a photo from the visit on social media and explained why he was absent during the session that led to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension. He said he was attending a three-day workshop on tax reform bills and was not informed about the emergency sitting where the decision was made.
After completing his engagement, Dickson and other opposition senators met with Akpoti-Uduaghan and her husband. He said senators support each other in difficult times and assured her of their efforts to resolve the issue quickly.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months after refusing to accept a new seat in the Senate chamber. The situation worsened when she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. Her suspension has led to widespread criticism, especially from women’s rights groups and civil society organizations.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also condemned the suspension, calling it an attempt to cover up the allegations against Akpabio. Meanwhile, opposition senators have promised to engage with Senate leadership to find a resolution soon.
