Man swallows stolen jewelryA man from Texas was caught after stealing expensive diamond earrings from a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando, Florida. He swallowed the stolen jewelry during his arrest, forcing detectives to wait for it to pass.
The suspect, 32, visited a Tiffany & Co. store on February 26. He told sales associates he was shopping for an Orlando Magic basketball player and wanted to buy diamond earrings and a ring. The staff took him to a VIP room to view the items.
Suddenly, he jumped from his chair, grabbed the jewelry, and tried to run. One of the employees tried to stop him and was injured in the process. However, they managed to knock the $587,000 diamond ring out of his hands, preventing him from taking it.
The suspect drove away, but mall security cameras captured his car’s license plate. Detectives tracked him using highway cameras as he drove toward Texas.
Florida state troopers stopped his car for having no rear lights nearly 550 kilometers away from Orlando. While being arrested, he swallowed two pairs of diamond earrings to hide the evidence.
An X-ray confirmed the earrings were inside the suspect’s body. Now, detectives must wait for them to pass naturally so they can recover the stolen items.
The man has been charged with grand theft and robbery with a mask. As of March 6, he remains in police custody in Orange County, Florida.
