Former Chelsea player Joe Cole has shared his thoughts on Chelsea’s ongoing goalkeeping struggles. He believes there is a deeper issue with how the club handles goalkeepers and has suggested Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels as a possible solution.
At the start of the season, Robert Sanchez was Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper under manager Enzo Maresca. However, after making costly mistakes, he lost his place in the team.
Filip Jorgensen, who joined Chelsea in the summer, replaced Sanchez but has also faced criticism for his performances, especially after Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Brighton and a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Joe Cole said Chelsea’s goalkeeping problems go beyond just poor performances. He pointed out that Chelsea has several goalkeepers on their books, including Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic, both of whom are out on loan. Despite having many goalkeepers, the club still struggles to find a reliable number one.
Cole believes Matz Sels, Nottingham Forest’s 32-year-old goalkeeper, could be the answer to Chelsea’s problems.
“Do you know who I think is one of the best goalkeepers in the league right now? Sels from Forest,” Cole said. “He is confident, makes great saves, and looks assured. You just have to pick the right one.”
With Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation in question, it remains to be seen whether the club will act on Cole’s advice and try to sign Sels. For now, the Blues will need to find stability in goal as they continue their season.
