ASUU-KASU suspends strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has officially suspended its strike.

According to a statement from the Commissioner for Education, Professor Muhammad Sani Bello, the dispute between ASUU-KASU and the government started before Governor Uba Sani took office.

However, the governor has shown concern and taken steps to resolve the issues affecting Kaduna State-owned universities.

ASUU-KASU Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, confirmed that the decision to suspend the strike was made on Saturday. He praised Governor Sani for his quick response and leadership in settling the disagreement.

The government has already released funds to pay 60% of the September 2017 withheld salaries and the supervision allowance for the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) for five sessions.

Additionally, an agreement has been reached to pay five months’ withheld salaries from May to September 2022. Other outstanding payments, including promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), pension remittances (2009-2019), death benefits, and Group Life Assurance, will also be addressed within a timeline.

Dr. Adamu emphasized that this intervention marks a positive shift from the past when lecturers faced victimization for participating in legal strikes.

With this development, academic activities are expected to resume at Kaduna State University, bringing relief to students and staff.
