Russia carried out a large air attack on Ukraine overnight, launching 161 drones and 14 missiles. The attack targeted gas infrastructure in the northeastern Kharkiv region and hit the power supply in the southern Odesa region for the second night in a row.
Ukrainian officials say this is part of a bigger plan to weaken Ukraine’s energy system. Over the past month, Russia has intensified its strikes, especially as discussions about ending the war continue between Russia and the new US administration of President Donald Trump. Trump has blamed Ukraine for Russia’s invasion.
Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, said Russia wants to stop gas production, which is essential for heating homes and businesses.
Ukraine’s military said it shot down 80 drones, while 78 were lost, likely due to electronic defenses. Russia also launched missiles at critical infrastructure in Kharkiv. The region, along with Poltava, produces nearly half of Ukraine’s gas.
Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state-owned oil and gas company, reported damage to its gas production facilities in several areas.
Despite the difficulties, the company is trying to keep the situation under control. Naftogaz CEO Roman Chumak said they are preparing for all possible scenarios and continue to import gas to meet the country’s needs.
Ukraine now faces a major challenge in protecting its energy system, especially with winter approaching.
