Being singled out is disrespectful and hurtful – Lookman hits back at Atalanta coach

Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has spoken out after facing strong criticism from his coach, Gian Piero Gasperini.

The manager publicly called Lookman the “worst penalty taker” following Atalanta’s 3-1 loss to Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, February 18.

On Wednesday, February 19, Lookman responded with a statement expressing his disappointment. He said he felt hurt and disrespected by being singled out despite his hard work and dedication to the club and its fans.

“Being singled out like this is painful and disrespectful. I have always given my best for the team and the fans of Bergamo,” Lookman stated.

The Nigerian international also explained that he did not act against team instructions when he took the penalty. He revealed that the team’s designated penalty taker had actually asked him to step up and take the shot.

“The player responsible for penalties told me to take it, and I accepted the responsibility to help the team,” he explained.

Lookman, who played a key role in Atalanta’s Europa League victory last May, admitted that he has faced tough moments at the club but has always put the team first. He said that the recent criticism made the situation even more painful.

“I have been through difficult times here, but I never spoke about them because the team always comes first. That’s why this situation is even more hurtful,” he added.

Lookman’s response has sparked discussions among fans and football analysts, with many questioning Gasperini’s approach in handling the situation.
