The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has praised Dr. Chukwudi Okoye for handling a difficult situation with maturity.
Dr. Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, was recently attacked by a female student while she was recording a TikTok video.
According to reports, Dr. Okoye was walking through a hallway where the student was filming. When he passed through, she became angry and attacked him, even biting him. Despite this, he remained calm and did not retaliate.
In a letter signed by ASUU UNIZIK’s Chairman, Kingsley Ubaoji, and Secretary, Joseph Onyejiaka, the union praised Dr. Okoye’s restraint. They described his reaction as a sign of professionalism and good character. ASUU stated that his behavior had brought honor to himself, the union, and the university.
The union also appreciated the Acting Vice-Chancellor for taking quick action on the matter. They assured staff members that the university is committed to a safe learning environment.
Meanwhile, the university has expelled the student and ordered her to leave the campus immediately.
ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of its members while ensuring a peaceful academic environment. They assured Dr. Okoye of their full support and solidarity.
