The US Army has announced that transgender individuals will no longer be allowed to join the military. Additionally, all gender transition-related medical procedures for service members have been paused.
In a statement posted on X, the US Army said that the decision takes effect immediately. The military will stop performing or supporting any medical procedures related to gender transition.
The statement also clarified that individuals with gender dysphoria who are already serving will be treated with dignity and respect.
However, no new enlistments of transgender individuals will be accepted, and all scheduled or planned medical treatments for gender transition will be halted.
This decision follows a series of executive orders signed by US President Donald Trump last month. One of these orders reinstates a ban on transgender service members, reversing a policy from the Biden administration that had allowed them to serve.
In 2017, Trump first introduced a ban on transgender Americans serving in the military. However, in 2021, President Joe Biden overturned that decision, allowing transgender individuals to enlist and serve.
Now, Trump has once again reversed Biden’s policy, signing an order on January 20 to reinstate the ban.
Along with banning transgender service members, Trump’s orders also include reinstating military personnel who were previously discharged for refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The latest announcement from the US Army confirms the military’s immediate compliance with the new policy.
The decision has sparked debate over the rights of transgender individuals in the armed forces and the future of military policies under Trump’s leadership.
