Governors from Nigeria’s Southwest region have agreed to form a joint surveillance team to boost security in response to increasing threats from ISWAP and other criminal groups.
The decision was made after a meeting of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, held at the State House in Lagos, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Governors present included Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Ademola Adeleke (Osun).
This action follows warnings from Governor Makinde about bandits fleeing the Northwest and entering Oyo State.
Concerns over rising insecurity have also been raised by leaders like the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, and the Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere.
During the meeting, the governors condemned the security situation and called for better cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and local security groups.
They agreed to establish a Joint Surveillance Monitoring Team to oversee security operations and improve coordination across the region. They also pledged to use advanced technology, such as aerial surveillance, to fight security challenges.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking for the group, emphasized their commitment to protecting the safety of the Southwest region.
