Liberian president suspends over 450 officials for failing to declare assets

Liberian President Joseph Boakai has suspended more than 450 government officials for failing to declare their assets. This step aligns with his promise to fight corruption and promote good governance.

According to the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), 457 officials did not submit their asset declarations before the November deadline.

This includes important figures like the minister in charge of the budget and several ambassadors.

Liberian law requires government officials to declare their assets when they take office and when they leave.

Since these officials failed to follow the rules, they are now suspended for one month without pay or until they submit their asset details.

President Boakai, who took office in November 2023, has made it clear that he is committed to good governance and accountability.

His office stated that not following asset declaration rules weakens efforts to fight corruption in Liberia.

Political analyst Abdullah Kiatamba believes this is a positive step for Liberia. He hopes the president will continue enforcing strict rules to ensure transparency in the government.

According to Transparency International, Liberia ranks 135th out of 180 countries in terms of corruption perception.

This means there is still a long way to go in improving transparency and integrity in the country.
