The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their decision to dismiss three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia States.
AYCF’s President General, Yerima Shettima, praised the move, calling it a positive step towards rebuilding public trust in Nigeria’s election process.
Shettima noted that President Tinubu’s request to the Senate to end the RECs’ appointments was a clear sign of commitment to fairness and accountability.
He also recognized the efforts of INEC in upholding electoral integrity, including the recent conviction of Professor Ignatius Uduk in Akwa Ibom State for electoral fraud during the 2019 elections. This, Shettima said, sends a strong message against election malpractice.
The AYCF also encouraged other stakeholders like the Directorate of State Security (DSS), the Police, and political parties to ensure internal measures are in place to prevent misconduct during elections.
Shettima emphasized that it’s not just the election officials who must act ethically, but everyone involved in the electoral process.
He also acknowledged the time taken to investigate the dismissed RECs, praising INEC for following due process and making fair decisions.
The AYCF believes this careful approach is crucial for maintaining the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system and regaining public trust.
In conclusion, Shettima expressed the forum’s full support for President Tinubu and INEC’s efforts to bring more transparency and integrity to Nigeria’s elections.
He called on all Nigerians to unite in these efforts to strengthen democracy and ensure free, fair, and transparent elections in the future.
